# How Gems work

> Gems are Mage's pay-per-generation currency. They work with every model, feature, and app, on any account including Free. Where they come from, what they cost, and when they expire.

Gems are Mage's pay-per-generation currency. They work with every model, feature, and app on Mage, on any account including Free, with no subscription required. Unlimited generation is separate: Gems are the alternative you pick per generation.

## What Gems are for

* Running a model above your plan.
* Going above your plan's resolution or duration ceiling.
* Fast Mode, which runs a generation at the front of the queue.
* Generating at all, if you are on Free.

## Where Gems come from

| Purchased package   | 10,000 Gems for \$10                            | 90 days after purchase                                               |
| Purchased package   | 20,000 Gems + 500 Bonus Gems for \$20           | 90 days after purchase                                               |
| Purchased package   | 40,000 Gems + 2,000 Bonus Gems for \$40         | 90 days after purchase                                               |
| Purchased package   | 100,000 Gems + 10,000 Bonus Gems for \$100      | 90 days after purchase                                               |
| Referral            | 5,000 Gems to you and to the person you invited | When they buy Gems or start a membership within 7 days of signing up |

A balance is capped at 300,000 Gems.

## Membership Gems versus purchased Gems

Membership Gems come with your plan, renew monthly, and expire 30 days after deposit. Purchased Gems expire 90 days after purchase. If you have both, plan around the membership allowance first, since that is the one with the shorter deadline.

## When to use Gems and when not to

| Generating a lot on models your plan covers       | Unlimited. This is what the subscription is for. |
| Trying a model above your plan                    | Gems                                             |
| You need output now                               | Gems, through Fast Mode                          |
| You need one clip longer than your plan's ceiling | Gems                                             |

## Auto Top-Up

Auto Top-Up keeps a balance without you watching it. Under the Gems tab in Settings you can set it to replenish your Gems when they run low.

## Referrals

Share your referral link from the Refer page on mage.space. When someone signs up through it and buys Gems or starts a membership within 7 days, you both receive 5,000 Gems.
